 The most interesting highlight of MVLiveMusic's January listening experience was Justin Joseph Edwards' show at the Niles Hot Topic. We're used to hanging out in nightclubs (and contributing to brewery profits and bartenders' kids' educational funds) to hear live music. Who could have imagined a clothing and accessory store as a performance venue? A very cool concept, even though it was a little cramped in between racks of shirts and jeans (and no opportunity to quench a thirst). But the "interesting" part wasn't limited only to the environment, it included the performer and his music. Justin is an eighteen-year-old college graduate (you read that right - he finished high school at fifteen!), with YSU music-instructor parents. So he's not just smart and talented, he also carries a double-helix of music genes. I previously met Justin as a member of Lyrical.Shake.Down at the Boom Room and Music Is Art. He's been writing music for four years, and he recently recorded his first solo, self-titled CD in his basement studio. Must be quite a basement and studio - this isn't a lo-fi, muddled "basement tapes" production, but a professional-quality endeavor that showcases Justin's lyrical and composition abilities. Even these old classic-rock-oriented ears appreciate and enjoy Justin's blend of electronica and rap lyric presentation with snippets of jazz horns, rock guitar, classical piano, and - surprise! - a tribute to 1930's crooner/uke tunes.
